Layering SPF skincare and makeup

The sun is the No. 1 cause of ageing, so it is vital to protect your skin with an SPF during the daytime. But how do you combine SPF products with makeup and what should you do if you’re going to be outside all day? Read on to find out more.

Day Moisturisers

For the best sun protection, we recommend always using a moisturiser with SPF 30 or greater during the day. A day moisturiser should be the last step in your skincare routine, before applying makeup. Apply liberally to your face, neck and décolletage and let it absorb fully for maximum coverage.

A primer with SPF prepares skin for makeup, helping it apply better and last longer, as well as providing an extra layer of lightweight sun protection. Layering a lightweight primer with SPF over your day moisturiser means you can feel confident that you’re getting full protection from the sun.

You can apply foundation over SPF moisturisers and primers, but it’s important to make sure these products are fully absorbed into your skin to prevent the sunscreen from becoming diluted (particularly if using a mineral sunscreen). You can then carefully apply your foundation. If you don’t want to wait, choose a foundation or tinted day cream with an SPF of at least 30.

Generally it is best not to rely solely on makeup with SPF, like foundation or powder, as your sole form of sun protection, because these products are not applied regularly or liberally enough to provide full protection from the sun.

If you are spending long periods of time in the sun, it is important to re-apply your SPF. In an ideal world, it would be best to re-apply your day cream with SPF,  but this isn’t always practical when you’re wearing a full face of carefully applied makeup.

A good compromise is to apply a pressed powder with SPF. Although pressed powders with SPF don’t provide enough sun protection when used on their own, they do offer a great way to top up your sun protection without ruining your makeup.
